Replacing name on a boat has other impacts. Some boats have the name painted on, others have name boards. Painted on names are a bit easier to change. Usually a little "Oven-Off" will remove the paint. But the problem is the same one that occurs on varnished boards. The shadow of the name will remain. On fiberglass usually a series of compounding with different grits will renew the surface to the point where the new name can be installed.
On varnished name boards, the boards will need to be totally stripped. The length of time the name has been on the boat will determine how deep the shadow will be. Some take a lot of sanding to get all traces of the name to totally disappear.
After thorough sanding the boards should be coated with a minimum of five coats of varnish. The last coat should be fine sanded and cleaned before the name is applied. After name is applied —either with painted letters or laser cut stick ons, the final three coats of varnish should be applied. If you try putting the name over top of a final finish, you will not be able to add maintenance coats later without sanding off the letters.
