Log of the 3rd Reef

The Scenic, Serene Life in the Slow Channel

3rd Reef

Statistics from a cruise on Third Reef, a 1988 Grand Banks 36 owned by Dixie and Byard Bridge of Oriental, NC. Cruise spanned 123 days from May 14, 1998.

Cruise took us from Oriental, NC across the Albermarle Sound and through Coinook to Norfolk. Then many steps in Chesapeake. In Toms River, NJ. along Barnegat Bay we spent over a week at or former boatyard in Toms River.

Leaving Tom's River we went out Manasquan Inlet, up through NY harbor to Tarrytown in one day. Another 2 days brought us to Troy, NY for a few days. We lowered our mast and headed for the first of many locks on the New York Barge Canal. Because of speed restrictions and bad weather it took 13 days from Troy to Oswego.

Leaving Oswego we visited and anchored at several U.S. Thousand Islands before going to Kingston, Ontario and the Flora McDonald Confederation Basin. After several days at this wonderful marina we headed "around the corner" to the first lock in the Rideac Canal System. We spent 10 days in this beautiful system whose hand-operated locks were manned by friendly, competent collage aged kids.

At lock 18, a cascade of 6 contiguous locks, we were lowered to the Ottawa River which we followed for the next few days and into the St. Lawrence thence down to Sorel, Quebec where we entered the Chambry Richelien Canal System. There were fewer locks and less traffic until we approached the NY border at Rousses Point where we check through with U.S. Customs. Lake Champlain captivated us for 10 days until we reached Troy, NY were we could retrace our old wake back home.
