1985 Grand Banks 42 Classic

This Grand Banks 42 Classic was the first "ultra low maintenance" Grand Banks that was developed by John Shannahan of the Oxford Yacht Agency and ordered from Grand Banks. In an attempt to lower maintenance cost, this boat was ordered with stainless steel windshield brackets, handrails, safety rails, and stanchions instead of the traditional varnished teak. She also has NO TEAK DECKS or teak transom, both areas are gelcoated instead, with non-skid paint on the decks. Her antenna brackets are high densitiy PVC, and she has twin Ford Lehman 160hp engines instead of the larger, more costly to maintain Caterpillars.

In the 1970's, 1980's, and beyond, Grand Banks used an exptremely powerful deck adhesive that fuses the teak to the solid (not cored) fiberglass deck. View the photo of the Deck Sample to see how much fiberglass and how much teak is used on a Grand Banks deck. When maintenance is not understood correctly, this magnificent, highest quality teak is depreciated rapidly by: 2 part teak cleaners, sudsy ammonia, teak brighteners, Oxalic acid, stiff brushes, bronze wool, and the uniformed. This super adhesive is the stumbling block in the eventual removal of the teak deck. Some boat yards have tried jack hammers, others have tried planers, and still others claim they can remove it by sand blasiting. The names of these highly respected and frustrated boat workers will be divulged for a crab cake. The problem then is repairing the fiberglass where the fused teak and adhesive rips holes in the fiberglass deck. An additional benefit to the lack of teak decks on this GB 42, as originally constructed, is the lack of screw holes in the deck! The non-teak deck without screw holes means the tanks are not likely to rust. This low maintenance GB 42 has a $35,000.00 advantage over any other GB 42 on the market with teak decks

On top of these advatages, this Low Maintenance GB 42 is perfectly set up and equipped for a cruising couple. She has been extensively cruised between the Canadian border, Florida, and the Bahamas.

Layout

Low Maintenance GB 42 has the typical Grand Banks 42 layout with additions that improve cruising life: Entering the main cabin at the port entry door, the galley is forward on the port side, the lower helm station is on the starboard side, with a large "counter" running the width of the boat below the windshield. Aft of the entry door is an oversized GB barrel chair with an end table, and the Grunert holding plate freezer is aft of this, in a teak cabinet with the entertainment center on top. Across the salon is a large L shaped settee with a custom teak parquet hi lo yacht table with 2 leaves. Forward of the settee is a dry bar with a new ice maker beneath, and the helmseat has been converted to storage (this can be removed easily to re-establish the helm seat). The Galley is to port with Grunert holding plate refrigerator and storage beneath white formica counters and stainless steel sink. There is dish storage above the sink, forward of the stove, and an additional cupboard at the aft end of the galley above the microwave oven. Forward is the guest cabin with a generous v-berth that has storage drawers beneath, a hanging locker, and ensuite head with shower. The Owner's cabin is aft of the salon, down 3 steps. Here there is a queen size island bed, teak joinery, GB desk and stool, starboard side bureau, built in Splendide washer/dryer, large head to port, shower to starboard, and a large hanging locker at the foot of the bed. Access to the engine room is under the steps to the forward cabin, and through the Salon sole. The interior has high quality carpeting over the teak parquet sole, which has been covered by carpet since new and is in splendid condition.
