1994 38' Lyman Morse

"Lyra"

"Lyra", the former "Chenango", was built on the Maine Coast by Cabot Lyman for an experienced offshore sailor. She is a lovely, remarkably stable, sea kindly, and solid yacht. The hull form is "right" and she is well mannered in head, beam, and following seas.

The current owners enjoyed cruising the "Loop" and lived comfortably aboard for stretches of up to six months. There is beauty in the details of this Lobster Yacht. The collaboration between knowledgeable sailor and quality custom boat builders Lyman-Morse is evident throughout. Moving fore and aft and about the decks and to and from the helm is easy, plenty of storage is built in, and only top notch equipment was installed. The fit and finish of the varnished teak interior is exemplary and is accented with decorative dolphin cut-outs.

Her hull sides were refinished by Coecles Marine(winter of 2009/2010) in Awl-Craft Sea Shell Green.

Accommodations

The forward cabin has a spacious "V" berth with custom mattress and matching pillows. There is a large hanging locker and plenty of other storage. A Bowmar hatch w/screen and two opening ports provide nice cross-ventilation. Reading lights are mounted in the right spots, and the digital controls for the forward AC unit is found here. The galley is next aft to port and the head compartment with large separate stall shower is opposite to starboard. The WC is supplied by fresh water. Continuing aft and up steps brings one to the main salon. The steering station is here, to starboard with a sliding door to access the side decks. There is a full sized chart table to port across from the helm. An L-shaped settee (convertible to double berth) follows the navigation station and a pair of chairs are opposite. Upholstery is pale gray ultra-suede, overhead (replaced in 2009) is white padded vinyl, and the teak is satin varnished with gloss varnish trim. Storage is built in everywhere for long distance cruising.

Galley (Down)

This large, U shaped galley is down and to port. The many drawers and lockers are finished in varnished teak which beautifully accents the blue counter-top. Decorative tiles are inset into the counter-top and locker ventilation is provided by dolphin shaped cutouts in the doors. This galley is well lit, well ventilated, and well organized. The Force Ten stove is propane so no running the gen-set to cook.

Electronics & Electrical

Yacht Electronic Systems (of Annapolis) was aboard Lyra in 2006 and installed AGM Glassmat Batteries and the RayMarine C80 integrated Chartplotter/Depthsounder/Radar. This system has worked flawlessly. Y.E.S.also performed a general 12volt and 110volt upgrade and straightening up that allowed for dependable electrical service during the owners "Loop" cruise.

Engine & Mechanical

The Two Zone Cruise Aire system offers a climate control mode while away from the boat. This will serve to dehumidify the boat when left in the slip for an extended period of time. There is also an Espar Diesel Heater plumbed throughout the boat.

Power is refreshingly "old school", via the 4 cylinder Detroit Diesel that is turbo-charged to give 325 HP. Original, previous, and current owner have all had dependable service from this engine with no major work required. This boat will in no way satisfy the "need for speed"! Plan on a nine knot comfy cruise and lot's more hours coming to this engine... Perhaps to compensate for the reputation of Diesel power being loud, the builder installed the Evolution Marine Shaft System to insure a smooth and quiet ride: Based on a study by the University of Maine Department of Engineering and Ultra-Sonic Acoustics Inc., of the EMSS installed on a 42-foot Grand Banks powered by a 3116 Caterpillar: * 83% decrease in hull vibration * 40% decrease in horizontal vibration * 16% reduction in engine vibration * 17 dBA noise reduction at the helm and in aft cabin.

Hull & Deck

The hull itself is #56 from Young Brothers of a design by Ernest Libby of Beals Island, Me. She was laminated using Vinyl-ester resins and then delivered to Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Company. Hull sides are recently Sea Shell Green Awl-Craft. There is a plethora of detail that speaks of years of experience on the part of the original owner, and of course the builder.

Broker Comment

In the late 1970's, Cabot Lyman finished off a pair of 46' Jarvis Newman hulls to yacht standards. These "Lobster Yachts" were built for two prominent members of the New York Yacht Club. My understanding is that this venture essentially launched Cabot Lyman's boat building career. A quarter century later, an offshore sailor/racer from Philadelphia named Robert Armstrong was guided to Cabot Lyman by his broker MItch Neff of Sparkman Stephens, for the custom build of "Chenango", the Downeast Yacht offered herein. Cabot was an obvious choice having previously built a 44' Sparkman & Stephens Sloop for Armstrong. This offering of "Lyra" is in fact a rare opportunity to own a boat built in the finest Maine tradition. Current owners have enjoyed 'Lyra" immensely and were rewarded with an event free "Loop". They would go again were it not for their advancing years. "Damn I hate getting old!"
